چکیده

It is not easy to discuss the question of infectivity in a disease for which there is no known cause. In this circum stance, one must rely on the epidemiological observations which suggest that a disease may be infectious. While epidemiological studies alone can never determine the specific etiology of a disease, they can often indicate whether its characteristics are consistent with those of an environmental agent (22). Through analysis of international comparisons, clustering in time and space, migration stud ies, familial aggregation, and such variables as age, sex, race, and socioeconomic status, the epidemiologist can frequently make deductions concerning various aspects of a disease. Thus, by careful consideration of time, place, and person factors, Medin noted the epidemic character of poliomyelitis in 1887 and, in 1905, before the infective nature of this disease had been demonstrated by transmis sion to monkeys, epidemiological evidence was presented to incriminate schools in its dissemination (52). It was also deduced that a carrier state must exist to explain satisfacto rily the mode of spread of this apparent infectious process (65). Before discussing the question, "is Hodgkin's disease infectious?" it would perhaps be best to review the evidence

A Case Report of Hodgkin's lymphoma with Early Manifestation of Henoch-Schonlein Purpura in a Child

Hodgkin's lymphoma is one of the most common types of lymphoma among children, usually characterized by persistent head and neck adenopathies that are unresponsive to antibiotic treatment. In rare cases, the primary manifestation of this malignancy includes paraneoplastic, immunological, and vasculitic syndromes in children. Here, we introduce a 13-year-old boy, and Hodgkin's lymphoma was initi...

Expression of Epstein-Barr virus in Hodgkin lymphoma Specimens in IRAN.

Background & Objectives: The Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV( is related with various diseases including infectious mononucleosis, Burkitt's lymphoma, Hodgkin's lymphoma, nasopharyngeal carcinoma and post-transplant lymphoprolifrative disorders. The aim of this study was to characterize the association between EBV and Hodgkin's lymphoma through EBERs in situ hybridization (EBER-ISH) in Iranian pat...

Discussion of Epidemiologic Studies Assessing the Role of the Epstein-Barr Virus in Hodgkin's Disease

The enigma of Hodgkin's disease etiology has fascinated several generations of researchers. Of particular scientific interest has been the hypothesis that Hodgkin's disease might have an infectious etiology. The paper by Mueller in this issue chronicles the development of the important work of two generations of investigators (herself and Dr. Alfred S. Evans) trying to explicate the role of vir...

Evidence for Infectious Component of Hodgkin's Disease and Related Considerations

The only et iological hypothesis for Hodgkin's disease that has been intensively pursued to date relates to its possible infectious nature. Recently, several investigators have evaluated the epidemiological (1,29) and immunological characteristics of this disorder t o determine whether they are consistent with this hypothesis. For example, Order and Hellman (21) have suggested that the cellular...

Down-regulation of Epstein-Barr virus nuclear antigen 1 in Reed-Sternberg cells of Hodgkin's disease.

AIMS To demonstrate Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) encoded nuclear antigen 1 (EBNA-1) gene expression in EBV associated disorders using a new monoclonal antibody (1H4-1) on routinely processed tissues. METHODS The pressure cooker antigen retrieval method was used for the immunohistochemical demonstration of EBNA-1 gene expression in formalin fixed, EBV positive tissues from Hodgkin's disease, infec...
